The unbeaten East Bladen Lady Eagles, the top seed in the Class 2A East, host Southwest Edgecombe at 7 p.m. Thursday in the second round of the NCHSAA Class 2A play-offs. Admission is $6.

In the Lady Eagles first round 56-27 victory over St. Pauls, senior Lacey Suggs fired in 24 points, freshman Ja’Tyra Moore-Peterson pumped in 13 points, and senior Christiana Cromartie added 10 points.

East Bladen played Tuesday night without senior point guard Abby Ward who fills up the stat sheet with 9 points, 7 assists and 6 steals per game. Ward missed the game due to an illness, and Coach Patty Evers said after Tuesday’s game that she is looking forward to getting her back.

Suggs leads the Lady Eagle attack with 22 points, 9 rebounds, 5 steals and 4.5 assists per game. Cromartie contributes 6 points, 6 rebounds and 4 blocks per game. Moore-Peterson has raised her season average to 9.4 points per game.

Southwest Edgecombe finished second in the Eastern Plains 2A Conference with a 5-5 league record. The Cougars outlasted No. 17 seed Warren County 52-46 in their opening round game.

Five-four junior Teliyah Owens pumps in 14 points a game to lead the Southwest offense. Tia Farmer, a 5-3 junior, averages 12 points, 4 rebounds and 4 steals per game.

Other key Lady Cougars include 5-10 sophmore Shayla Ellis who works inside for 8.6 points and 9 rebounds per game and 5-6 senior Keychonia Williams who adds 6.3 points and 4.5 rebounds per game.

In games against other teams in the Class 2A play-offs, Southwest Edgecombe lost twice to No. 3 North Pitt by scores of 65-20 and 69-41, split with No. 28 Wilson Beddingfield winning 53-47, before losing 55-50 and swept No. 22 North Johnston by scores of 47-41 and 60-38.
