DUNCAN, SC – Bladenboro native Abbey Walters pitched a 2-hit shutout Saturday as UNC-Pembroke defeated Barton 8-0 in the Mid-South Classic. The Lady Braves downed Converse 12-3 in their second game of the day.

It was the third shutout and fourth complete game of the season for Walters who raised her record to 6-1. The senior righthander struck out four, walked one and needed only 58 pitches to complete 6 innings in the mercy rule win.

At the plate Walters batted 2-4 with a run-scoring double in the fourth inning.

In the win over Converse, Walters walked, stole a base and raced home on Taylor Gephart’s single in the Lady Braves 7-run first-inning. The West Bladen grad knocked in a run with a single to left in the fourth inning and later scored a run.

Walters currently leads the Peach Belt Conference in batting with a .542 average. Whiteville’s Malerie Leviner pitched 4 shutout innings to pick up the win for UNC-Pembroke in the nightcap.

The Lady Braves continue play Sunday in the Mid-South Classic with games against Wingate at 12 noon and against Catawba at 2 p.m.
