MILLEDGEVILLE, GA – West Bladen grad Abbey Walters was named to the All-Peach Belt Conference Softball Team Thursday night. Tuesday Walters was chosen to the Peach Belt Conference Softball All-Academic Team.
It was the second consecutive year that the UNC-Pembroke senior has been selected to the All-PBC squad, and it was her first appearance on the All-Academic Team.
To qualify for the All-Academic team, a student-athlete must have 1) participated in at least half of their team’s events and be either a starter or significant contributor; 2) achieved a 3.3 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and 3) completed at least one full academic year at their current institution and has reached their sophmore year of eligibility.
Walters has compiled a 3.7 GPA while majoring in exercise and sports science at UNC-P. The Bladenboro native batted .415 in 51 games this year and finished with 27 extra-base hits and 39 runs batted in.
The senior pitcher/outfielder ranked second in the Peach Belt with 54 runs scored, 68 hits, 115 total bases, 17 doubles and a .701 slugging percentage. Walters was fourth in the league in stolen bases (28-for-28) and batting average. She was sixth in the PBC in home runs (10) and 12th in on-base percentage (.461).
Walters had 20 multi-hit games, 9 games with at least 3 hits and 8 multi-RBI games. She also compiled a team-best 19-game hitting streak and reached base in 22 straight games.
In the circle Walters led the Lady Braves with 12 wins and posted a 2.59 Earned Run Average in 25 starts. Her 17 complete games ranked second in the conference, her 5 shutouts are fifth-best in the league. She also finished in the top 10 in the PBC in games started, wins, innings pitched (143.1), strike-outs (115) and strike-outs per game (5.6). Opponents only batted .231 against her.
In 2016 Walters was All-Region, All-State, and All-PBC. She was a 2017 pre-season All-PBC honoree and recorded her second career no-hitter this season in a 13-0 win over Barton on Feb. 11.
