When a person dies, the cause of death is ruled by a coroner or medical examiner. Causes of death on a death certificate represent a medical opinion, which may vary among individual medical-legal officers.

“Cause of death” is defined as, “disease or injury that initiated morbid events leading to death, or the circumstances of the accident or violence that produced fatal injury” by the CDC.

A death is ruled as accidental if there is little or no evidence that the injury or poisoning occurred with intent to harm or cause death.

According to the Bladen County Register of Deeds, there were 12 accidental deaths in Bladen County last year (2020). In the United States as a whole, there were nearly 200,000 accidental fatalities in 2020.
