Spread the love

By: Amy Schumacher

The week of May 14 – May 20 is recognized as “National Police Week” and has brought about the opportunity to once again “Adopt-A-Cop”. Melonie Knight Davis who works at First South Bank in Elizabethtown and is married to one of the police officers that serves the people of White Lake, Officer Jay Davis, began the program. Within one week every “cop” was adopted and then adopted a second time. Davis has again organized this program and as of May 1, 2017, all but 35 of our police force have been adopted.

Our community is asked to once again pull together and recognize these men and women who serve to protect us. Please contact Melonie via phone (910-498-0492) or email (bladencountyadoptacop@yahoo.com) to secure your opportunity to “Pay It Forward” and adopt-your-cop. You will be given an officer’s name and badge number at this time. A gift of $25 and a note of thanks to these officers will show them the appreciation we have for the people that keep our communities, our families, and our schools safe. Gifts can be as simple as a gift card or you can take the time to make a goody basket for your assigned officer.

A luncheon will be held for the officers as well using donations from First South Bank and other local businesses that want to show their appreciation. This date will be announced once all funding is finalized.

Melonie would love to continue these acts of kindness semi-annually and plans to organize this event each year in May and again in December. Please help this cause and make contact with Melonie as soon as possible so as a community we can ensure each one of our police force are recognized for their service.

The following personnel are included in the more than 120 policemen that are being recognized for their service:

The Elizabethtown Police Department and one (1) canine
The White Lake Police Department
The Bladenboro Police Department
The Bladen County Sheriffs Department and two (2) canines
The State Highway Patrol
The Wild Life and Park Rangers

In August of 2016, with recent police shootings being covered on every news station, Bladen County started the “Adopt-A-Cop” program. This program asked that Bladen County citizens Adopt-A-Cop by purchasing a gift and writing a letter and a card to recognize them for their service to our community. Within one week every “cop” was adopted and then adopted a second time. The program was again set in motion in December 2016 to recognize that our police force doesn’t normally spend the Christmas holiday with their families, but work to serve and protect all those living and traveling into our county.
