BLADEN COUNTY, N.C. – After an illustrious career spanning 24 years of dedicated service to the State of North Carolina, District 13-A Senior Resident Superior Court Judge Douglas Sasser has announced his retirement. With one year as a teacher and an impressive 23 years as a judge, Sasser has decided it’s time to hang up his robe and embark on a new adventure called retirement.

On July 1, 2023, the Honorable Judge Sasser expressed his sentiments on his social media account, saying, “Finally, I am officially retired! My heartfelt thanks to the many amazing, talented, and hardworking people I have had the privilege to work with over the 23 years that I have been blessed to be a judge. Thanks as well to my family and friends for your love, support, and, at times, understanding during this period. I can’t wait to see what adventures I can come up with now!”

Sasser’s journey in the legal realm began as a District Court Judge, presiding over the counties of Bladen, Brunswick, and Columbus. Later, he rose to the esteemed Senior Resident Superior Court Judge position. Notably, he was re-elected on November 8, 2016, a testament to his exceptional judicial abilities.

Beyond his legal expertise, Judge Sasser’s warm and caring demeanor has endeared him to the hearts of the community. He has consistently demonstrated a genuine concern for the well-being of those who enter his courtroom, treating each person with the utmost respect and empathy.

Bladen County, NC has been fortunate to have Judge Sasser as a pillar of justice and compassion. His impact on the lives he has touched is immeasurable, and his legacy as a beloved figure will endure for years to come.

As Judge Douglas Sasser bids farewell to his esteemed position, the community he has served will forever remember his dedication, fairness, and commitment to justice.

“Judge Sasser is fair, honest, and straight as an arrow,” said Elizabethtown Attorney Allen Johnson.

Jackie Mitchell, Sue Hester, and many others agreed and added that Judge Sasser is a great judge and person. 

Judge Sasser was celebrated in May with a farewell reception given by Columbus County and again in June with a retirement dinner.

Looking ahead to the coming months, Sasser eagerly anticipates the simple joys of retirement. With the freedom to choose his path, he envisions days filled with fishing excursions, capturing captivating photographs with his camera, and creating cherished memories with his grandchildren at the park.
