Denise and Dan, and their two children, lived frugally but were always able to pay their bills and put a little aside for a rainy day. When Dan died last year, Denise found herself trying to support their two young children on her salary alone, and the savings disappeared quick. In addition to the loss of the primary income of their household, the family’s finances are stretched because of increasing of prices of everything from gas to groceries to utilities. If not for help from the Bladen County Empty Stocking fund, there would be no gifts on Christmas for her two young children.
With about a quarter of Bladen County children living in poverty, and increasing prices, many families are wondering how they will afford to provide something under the tree this year.
In 2022, the Empty Stocking Fund helped 101 children have presents on Christmas. This was less than half the number of children assisted in 2021.
Leinwand’s Store has been a long-time supporter and partner with the Empty Stocking Fund. This year, Walmart is also participating. Each child selected will receive a $75 voucher to provide clothing or toys.
Lumber River United Way needs your donations to help the families in our community. Applications were taken through Bladen County DSS and screened carefully. Vouchers are distributed in time for parents to shop before Christmas. Lumber River United Way charges no administrative fees, guaranteeing that 100% of donations go to assisting children.
