Bladen County Headlines … 35 Years Ago

The town commissioners of White Lake announced that the White Lake ABC store would be closing.

The Clarkton Tobacco Market opened with great fanfare. The New Clarkton Warehouse, on the first day of sales, sold 101,765 pounds of tobacco at an average price of $1.54 per pound. The Jimmy Green Warehouse sold 200,000 pounds of tobacco for an average of $1.55 per pound. Farmers were saying this year’s crop was the best since 198l. The first day sales put $466,718 into Bladen’s economy.
