A staff report

Bladen County, NC – Bladen County Schools, Elly Johnson made an important announcement today regarding the safety and well-being of its students and staff. Due to the potential risks associated with heavy rain and wind gusts exceeding 50 MPH, the school district has taken the proactive step of transitioning to a virtual learning day on Tuesday, January 9, 2024. This decision has been made out of an abundance of caution and concern for the safety of all involved.

In light of the weather conditions, it has been determined that the maximum safe wind speed limit for buses to travel is 35 MPH. To ensure the safety of students and bus drivers, Bladen County Schools has opted for asynchronous learning for this day. This means that elementary and middle school teachers have prepared assignments to send home with students today, while high school teachers will place assignments in Canvas, the school’s online learning platform.

Furthermore, all after-school activities, including athletic events scheduled for Tuesday, have been canceled. The cancellation of these activities is aimed at minimizing any potential risks associated with the adverse weather conditions.

As of now, the school district plans to resume normal operations on Wednesday, January 10. However, it is essential for students, parents, and staff to stay informed and prepared for any updates or changes that may arise. Bladen County Schools strongly encourages everyone to remain vigilant by regularly checking the district’s official website, official social media accounts, and local news outlets for any additional announcements or developments.
