Bladen County’s youth all-stars suffered a 7-6 defeat to Fairmont on Tuesday, July 18, 1989. The tourney was held at Bladen County Recreation Park. This loss for Bladen was the first in the District IX double-elimination tournament.

Bladen’s offense was able to outhit Fairmont eight to three but did not reflect on the final score. Four of those eight Bladen hits came off home runs.

Fairmont got the first run of the game in the top of the first but of Fernon Smith two-out home run in the bottom of the inning. At the top of the second, Fairmont added two more runs to put themselves up 3-1. Bladen’s Donte Pone cut the deficit to 3-2 with his solo home run in the bottom of the second.

After no scoring from either team in the third inning, Fairmount took advantage of Bladen’s miscues, putting up three runs in the fourth to make it a 6-2 ballgame. Micheal Dicks led off the bottom of the inning with Bladen’s third home run of the game to make it 6-3 Fairmount.

In the fifth inning, Fairmount scored an insurance run off a walk and a double. Bladen hit home run number four of the game, this time from Rodney Ellis , making the game 7-6 and capping the scoring for the game.

Ray Marlowe, Fernon Smith, and Rodney Ellis had two hits each for Bladen County. Michal Dicks and Donte Pone followed with one hit each.
