Bladen County held its first Child Support Amnesty Day on Tuesday which was deemed a success said the Bladen County Department of Social Services Child Support Supervisor Martha Howe.

“It went pretty good,” said Howe.

She said the department was receiving telephone calls prior to Tuesday with folks making inquiries to learn if they qualified for the Amnesty Day.

“We didn’t have a lot of people which wasn’t shocking to us,” said Howe.

A total of seven folks took advantage of the offer of amnesty from arrest if they appeared in court Tuesday morning and paid $500 towards their child support payment. They must now continue to make their child support payments on a regular basis.

Howe said that prior to Tuesday, there was a total of 53 cases her agency was hoping to clear up with the offer of amnesty from arrest.

“I think the biggest fear was if they came to court, they will go to jail anyway,” said Howe.

She said now those seven folks who took advantage of the amnesty offer, either have jobs and have cleared up an old order of arrest or if they did not have a job and an old order of arrest, Howe said her staff is working with them to find a job.

Howe said the goal of Tuesday’s Child Support Amnesty Day was to help get those with old orders of arrest back on track and making regular child support payments.

If you have questions about your child support payments or need to get back on track with your child support payments, you can call 910-862-6800 and ask for your child support case worker.
