ELIZABETHTOWN – The Rock Hounds held off a 4-run 6th inning rally and edged the Rays 7-6 Wednesday night in the final Dixie Boys Baseball game of the regular season at County Park.
Jerod Smith and Samuel Cummings drew walks, and Noah German, Owen Hall and Jax Hansen delivered singles as the 1st 5 Rays’ batters in the 6th reached base. Smith, Cummings, German and Hall all scored to slice a 7-2 Rock Hound lead to 7-6.
However, Rock Hound relief pitcher Omar Powell struck out the 3rd batter that he faced, then another Rays runner was thrown out stealing. A ground out ended the game.
Rock Hound starting pitcher Fox Sutton pitched 5-plus innings and allowed 5 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out 12 batters to pick up the win. Powell relieved 4 batters into the final inning and gave up a run on 2 hits and a walk while striking out 1 to record the save.
The Rays grabbed an early lead as Greylon Robinson reached base on an error and raced home when Noah German swatted a single to right-center field.
The Rock Hounds answered in the bottom of the 1st. Omar Powell walked then sprinted home when Sutton walloped a triple. Delton Murdock reached base on an error that scored Sutton. Cayden Morton knocked in Murdock with a double and later scored to push the lead to 4-1.
Powell cracked a 2-out single in the 2nd inning then darted home when Chandler Wall slammed a double to pad the lead to 5-1.
Smith ripped a 2-out single in the Rays’ 3rd inning and dashed home when German smashed a single to left-center field to trim the margin to 5-2.
Jayden Byrd reached base on an error in the Rock Hound 4th inning and scored to up the count to 6-2. Murdock smacked a 2-out single in the Rock Hound 5th inning and scored when Cayden Morton laced a single to left-center field.
Morton batted 2-for-3 with a double, 1 RBI and a run scored to lead the Rock Hound hitters. Sutton slugged the RBI triple. Wall slammed the RBI double. Powell and Murdock added 1 hit each. Powell and Murdock scored 2 runs each. Sutton and Byrd scored 1 run each. Murdock had 1 RBI.
German batted 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs and a run scored to lead the Rays’ hitters. Smith, Hall and Hansen added 1 hit each. Hall had 2 RBIs and Hansen had 1 RBI. Smith scored 2 runs and Robinson, Cummings and Hall scored 1 run each.
Robinson started on the mound for the Rays and pitched 2 innings allowing 5 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out 2. German worked 3 innings of relief and allowed 2 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out 4.
