The East Bladen Cougars and South Brunswick baseball teams went through the wire on Tuesday, April 14, 1987. East Bladen went on to be 6-0 in the Waccamaw Conference standings as South Brunswick went to 4-2.

South Brunswick started off with an early 2-0 lead on the Cougars. Walter Beck hit a two-run home run in the top of the first inning. In the bottom of the first inning, East Bladen’s Vince Cambell walked at his bat. Cambell proceeded to steal second and third base. Wally Brinson brought in Cambell off a sacrifice fly, making the game 2-1.

South Brunswick answered back in the third inning, making it a 3-1 ballgame. East Bladen scored in the bottom of the fifth with Vince Cambell getting on base and Kevin Stone bringing Cambell in with an RBI single, making it 3-2.

The Cougars scored the last, winning runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Vince Cambell walked for the third time in the ballgame. His at-bat would be followed by a Phillip Greene single. Both Greene and Cambell would advance on a wild pitch the next at-bat. Vince Cambell scored on another RBI sacrifice by Will Brinson to tie the game 3-3. Larry Robinson hit an RBI single to bring in Greene to put East Bladen up 4-3.

The winning pitcher for East Bladen was John Schultz. Schultz gave up four hits, walked three batters, and struck out an impressive 12 batters. Five of those 12 strikeouts came in the last two innings for Schultz to seal the deal for the Cougars.
