An 8-run Slammer rally in the last inning came up one run shot as the Comets held on for an 11-10 victory Thursday night in Bladen Recreation 13-16 Softball action at County Park.

The Comets took an 11-2 lead into their last at-bat. Abbie Cross drew a walk and scored when Shanell McMillian beat out an infield hit, and Nesiah Davis-McKoy walked. McMillian scored on Lexy Guy’s fielder’s choice, and Jordan Kinlaw beat out an infield hit that scored Davis-McKoy.

Sydney Gardner legged out an infield hit, and Joi Kemp, Gray Guy and Briana Spears drew walks that forced home Lexy Guy, the courtesy runner for Kinlaw, and Gardner. Comet starting pitcher Erica Storms returned to the circle at that point replacing relief pitcher Brittney Landreth.

Johanna Parker was hit by a pitch that forced home Kemp, and Cross’ fielder’s choice plated Gray Guy. A walk to McMillian forced home Spears, but Storms struck out the next batter to end the game and pick up the save.

Storms pitched 0.2 innings and allowed 2 runs on 4 walks and 2 hit batters while striking out two. Winning pitcher Landreth pitched 2.1 innings and gave up 8 runs on 3 hits, 7 walks and a hit batter while striking out two.

Katie Guyton and Lauren Pait both batted a perfect 2-2 to lead the Comet hitters. Storms slammed a double, and Landreth, Jordan Benson, Natalie Ludlum, Alyssa Suggs and Emma Smith contributed one hit each to the ten-hit Comet attack.

Kinlaw pitched all 3 innings for the Slammers and gave up 11 runs on 10 hits, 3 walks and a hit batter while striking out seven. Kinlaw, McMillian and Gardner connected for one hit each for the Slammers.

The Comets took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Katelyn Willoughby walked and raced home when Storms hammered a double.

The Slammers answered with 2 runs in the home first. Parker and Cross drew walks to begin the inning. Parker stole home to tie the game, and Cross dashed home on a passed ball for a 2-1 lead.

A 7-run, second-inning vaulted the Comets into an 8-2 lead. Lauren Pait led off the inning with a single and scored when Alyssa Suggs cracked a single. After Emily Pait was hit by a pitch, Suggs scooted home as Amber Hickman reached base on a passed third strike.

Emily Pait sprinted home on a passed ball, and Emma Smith beat out a bunt single that scored Hickman. Amelia Brisson walked, and Alyssa Benson reached base on a passed third strike that scored Smith. Landreth lined a single to centerfield that drove in Brisson and Alyssa Benson.

Guyton belted a single in the Comet third inning and scored when Ludlum laid down a bunt single. Lauren Pait slapped a single to rightfield that scored Ludlum. Lauren Pait darted home on a wild pitch.

The narrow victory left the Comets with a 2-1 record. The Slammers are 1-2.
