Christmas is a time of great excitement, spending time with family and friends and a time when folks are traveling and ordering gifts from the internet. It is also time for holiday scams.

Bladenboro Police Chief Chris hunt said, “I want to remind everyone to be cautious of holiday scams. I don’t want anyone to be a victim of a scam this holiday season.”

Hunt said there are a few scams being carried on social media, by telephone and in emails that folks need to be aware of during this time of year. The following are scams folks need to be aware of:

Secret & Illegal Gifting Scam: The Secret Sisters Gift Exchange is popping up on social media. Invitees are told to send a $10 gift to the next person on the list and invite six friends to join. This is a scam. Participating violates the Postal Lottery Statute.

Chip Card Scam: Not all debit and credit card issuers have sent new EMV chip cards to their customers yet. Knowing this, scammers are telling people that they must provide personal information or money to obtain a new card. This is not true.

Fake Shipping Notices: Scammers send a fake email that claims a package was sent by you or is to be delivered to you. The purpose is to try to collect personal information or download a virus. Delete it without responding.

Fake E-Commerce Websites: Fraudulent websites are common. So finding a fabulous offer from a website with which you are not familiar could be a red flag. Remember, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

“The Bladenboro Police Department would like to ask everyone, to be cautious when giving anyone your personal information. We want you to outsmart the scammers, by being informed of their deceitful practices,” said Hunt.
