The town of Bladenboro has received a grant in the amount of $126,720 for Hurricane Matthew recovery. The announcement was made on Wednesday by the North Carolina Department of Commerce.

Bladenboro Town Administrator John O’Daniel said the funds will be used to remove storm debris, sediment and trees from the Bryant Swamp Drainage District.

“We had a lot of storm debris and sediment that washed into the channel,” said O’Daniel. The debris and sediment are impeding the flow of the water in the Bryant Swamp Drainage District.

The county recently received a grant in the amount of $800,000 for storm debris and tree removal. O’Daniel said one of the areas the county is planning to clean is the area from Richardson Road to the Robeson County line.

According to a release, the grants are part of $10.25 million in funding provided by the state legislature to the N.C. Department of Commerce to address rural economic development and small business needs following the storm and its historic floods.

Bladenboro was one of seven locations to receive funding. The other locations receiving funds were Snow Hill in Greene County, Green County, Elizabeth City in Pasquotank County, Farmville in Pitt County, Ayden in Pitt County, and Winterville in Pitt County.

O’Daniel said the town is also waiting to receive the final reimbursement of funds from FEMA.
