The Bladen County Board of Elections met on Tuesday afternoon and approved 35 mail absentee ballots that have been submitted since last week’s meeting.

Board of Elections Director Cynthia Shaw told the board that a school of instruction was to be conducted Tuesday night at 6 p.m. for the folks that will work during the November election.

Shaw told the board that Board of Elections staff have actually mailed out over 1,000 mail absentee ballots.

“Now, of course, we don’t have many back in,” said Shaw

Since One Stop voting began on Thursday of last week, 97 folks had cast their ballots as of Tuesday afternoon.

Shaw presented the board with the mail absentee ballots for approval.

“We have received 35 back that are okay. We have had three that came back as undeliverable and we will try to locate a good address for them,” said Shaw.

As of Tuesday, the mail absentee total is 246.

“Is what we are doing typical?” asked Board member Al Daniels.

Shaw said, “Mecklenburg (county) had only voted about 100 people.”

She also told the board that a fourth mail absentee ballot was returned as undeliverable. She said this was the second attempt by Board of Elections staff to send the voter the requested ballot.

The board decided to reissue the three ballots that were returned as undeliverable and the fourth ballot the board staff will not try again.

“Personal responsibility becomes an issue at some point,” said Ludlum.
