The Cape Fear River is expected to crest Wednesday morning at the William O. Huske Lock and Dam No. 3 near Tar Heel and near Elizabethtown, according to the National Weather Service.

As of 10:30 p.m. the observed river level near Tar Heel was reported to be 69.27 feet and flood stage is 42 feet. The Cape Fear River near Elizabethtown was observed at 40.04 feet and flood stage is 25 feet.

The forecast for the crest calls for the river to reach four feet higher than the level observed in Hurricane Matthew for the Elizabethtown area.

The Cape Fear River at William O. Huske Lock and Dam No. 1 near Kelly is forecast to crest on Thursday through Sunday at about two feet higher than the level observed for Hurricane Matthew, the National Weather Service said. As of 10:30 p.m. the observed level in that location was 26.38 feet and flood stage is 24 feet.
