Prepare to immerse yourself in a delicious dive into history and culture at the Blue Monday Shad Fry, returning to US Lock & Dam #1 today, April 1. This beloved event offers a unique opportunity to celebrate North Carolina’s rich heritage while indulging in mouthwatering dishes, and the best part? It’s completely free for everyone!

Each early spring, the American Shad embarks on its annual migration to North Carolina rivers, particularly the Cape Fear River, to spawn. These saltwater herrings play a vital role in the state’s food web and hold significant historical importance. According to experts at the Natural Sciences website, American Shad was essential for indigenous peoples’ and early settlers’ survival in the New World.

Recognizing the cultural significance of this tradition, NC House Representatives Ken Waddell and William Brisson introduced House Bill 241, designating the Blue Monday Shad Fry in East Arcadia as the official State Blue Monday Shad Fry over a decade ago.

During the event, attendees can savor a plate of American Shad with sides, all provided at no cost. Organizers meticulously prepare the “Founding Fish” and its eggs, ensuring a delectable experience for all. With approximately 500 to 1,000 individuals participating each year, the Blue Monday Shad Fry has become a cherished local tradition.

Make sure to join in the US Lock and Dam #1 festivities at 996 Locks No 1 Road in Riegelwood, NC. Fish plates will be served to all attendees from 11 am to 2 pm on Easter Monday, April 1, 2023. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to celebrate North Carolina’s heritage and indulge in a culinary delight!
