The Clarkton Lions Club 6th annual Strides Walk held Saturday was a success according to the members present. The annual event is held each year to raise awareness of diabetes and its complications. The goal is to help educate the community about managing the disease with hopes of preventing an increase of cases.

According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, thirty-four million people in the United States have diabetes, and the disease is the seventh leading cause of death in America. Some risk factors include, being overweight, being over the age of 45, having a parent, brother or sister with Type 2 diabetes, having gestational diabetes (during pregnancy), being African-American, Hispanic, or Native American, or having fatty liver disease.

Although some safety measures had to be put in place this year due to COVID-19, the Strides walk was a great success. “17 walkers were participating in the event,” Clarkton Lions Club President Richard Batten stated.

“We pay our own way. The donation we receive go straight to all the organizations we help. 100% of all the money we collect goes towards our causes,” Club member Rusty Marsh stated.
