CHARLOTTE – Congressman Robert Pittenger (NC-09) is excited to announce an $841,151 U.S. Department of Education grant to improve college and career preparedness for Lumbee Indian youth, with a particular emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).

The grant, which is expected to be renewed annually for a total of four years, will:

*Create a STEM program for 878 Lumbee Indian elementary, middle, and high school students, including integrated year-round STEM and career-focused academic, career, and cultural enrichment activities.

*Promote STEM awareness and college and career exploration for 400 Lumbee students.

*Remove pedagogical, academic, curricular, and financial barriers to student success in STEM courses for 2,200 Lumbee high school students.

The grant will be awarded to Lumbee Land Development, Inc. and involves a consortium including Public Schools of Robeson County, Robeson Community College, and UNC Pembroke.

“The Lumbee are proud, hardworking Americans who for too long have lacked full federal recognition and benefits,” said Congressman Pittenger.  “This grant is an important step forward to help Lumbee children learn valuable skills which will help them better compete for 21st-century, high-paying, in-demand jobs.  In my remaining time as your Congressman, I will continue to advocate on behalf of the Lumbee at every opportunity.”
