WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Robert Pittenger (NC-09) sent a bipartisan letter to the House Committee on Appropriations and House Leadership urging continued funding for Hurricane Matthew recovery efforts.
Co-signed by the entire North Carolina Congressional delegation, the letter asks that North Carolina recovery funding be included in future legislation related to Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria.
“As Congress considers funding for long-term recovery efforts for states and territories affected by storms this year, we ask that North Carolina and other states with unmet needs from 2016 remain eligible for potential funding in future disaster relief legislation,” writes Congressman Pittenger and his North Carolina colleagues. “This includes any changes that would allow for the provision of funding for HUD mitigation and resiliency projects, which was not included in the Congressional response to 2016 natural disasters. Finally, we urge you to consider additional federal programs, such as those administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture or the U.S. Economic Development Administration, that were included in previous disaster response efforts but have not been significantly utilized in recent supplemental appropriations legislation.”
Congressman Pittenger sent today’s letter to Chairman Rodney Frelinghuysen of the House Committee on Appropriations and Speaker Paul Ryan.
Nearly 98,000 homes and 19,500 businesses were damaged by Hurricane Matthew in North Carolina. To date, $1.28 billion in federal funding has been provided for recovery efforts. Much of that money is released to the State of North Carolina, which is then responsible for distributing it to affected counties and municipalities.
