Hurricane Matthew damaged Southeastern North Carolina in more ways than one. The North Carolina Department of Transportation has been creative in building roads and detours to help motorists travel with the least amount of change.

Highway 701 in Elizabethtown was washed out during the big storm last October. Now the road has a new traffic flow to follow until the new intersection is finished.

Also on Highway 53 West a one lane land bridge has been made over what once was a pond. There is a detour down River Road in White Oak for commercial vehicles.
