A Staff Report

New Hanover and Bladen Counties in North Carolina are set to witness improvements and maintenance work on their railroad crossings thanks to the efforts of CSX, one of the leading transportation and rail service providers in the United States. This article will provide:

  • An overview of the upcoming projects.
  • Highlighting the planned schedule closures.
  • The areas are to be covered by two distinct teams from CSX.

CSX has organized two teams, each with specific roles and tasks to complete in New Hanover and Bladen Counties. The first team is a rail team scheduled to work from November 6th to November 22nd. The second team is a tie team that will operate from November 13th to December 1st.

Some crossings in the region are set to receive both new rails and ties, an essential part of the railroad infrastructure. These crossings are the focus of CSX’s maintenance efforts. The reason for “basing in” these crossings is the sequencing of the work. The rails will be laid first, and then, 1-2 weeks later, the ties will be installed. This sequence can cause some roughness in these crossings until the work is completed.

For the rail team, several crossings will be closed for at least 3+ days. The rail comes in ribbons of 120 feet, and the team will lay the rail continuously, running it all the way down the track, returning back up, and then repeating the process on the other side. This meticulous work ensures the safety and reliability of the rail system.

The tie team will also be working on various crossings. These crossings will be closed for at least 3-4 days. Their work is crucial for maintaining the stability of the track and ensuring the safety of train operations.

To provide the local community with a clear understanding of which crossings will be affected and when, Angela D Nelis, the Chief Operations Officer of Southern Commercial Development and Railroad Divisional Manager, Southeastern Division, has provided Google Maps lists for both teams. These maps include a comprehensive list of crossings along with their estimated closure dates, which may change due to unforeseen circumstances.

For the rail team, you can view the list of crossings at the following link: Rail Team Crossings.

For the tie team, you can view the list of crossings at the following link: Tie Team Crossings.

These maps provide a resource for local residents and businesses to stay informed about the maintenance schedule and prepare accordingly.

Stay informed, and plan your routes accordingly.
