The Curtis L. Brown, Jr. Field Airport, in Elizabethtown, North Carolina, has embarked on a transformative resurfacing project, marking a significant milestone in its ongoing efforts to enhance its infrastructure and services. The project, which commenced on September 11, according to Rusty Worley with the Town of Elizabethtown, brings exciting developments that will benefit both aviation enthusiasts and the local community.
The catalyst behind this ambitious undertaking is a substantial grant provided by the North Carolina Department of Aviation, totaling an impressive $4.7 million. Additionally, funding from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has played a crucial role in bringing this project to fruition. With these financial resources at their disposal, the airport’s management is well-equipped to embark on this critical improvement journey.
During the course of this project, local airport will be temporarily closed to ensure the safety and efficiency of the resurfacing efforts. This closure, expected to last approximately two months, will facilitate two essential aspects of the project. Firstly, the airfield will undergo milling, a process designed to prepare the surface for the second key phase, which involves adding a two-inch asphalt top layer. This rejuvenation will not only enhance the airport’s runway but also extend its lifespan by a significant margin.
The resurfacing endeavor doesn’t stop at the runway. The Curtis L. Brown, Jr. Field Airport has also earmarked improvements for its parking area and aircraft fueling facilities. These enhancements are set to elevate the overall experience for visitors and users of the airport. The airport has witnessed impressive growth, with an average of 1400 operations per month over the last year.
