PINEHURST – The first of two days of competition in the NCHSAA Women’s Golf Championships has concluded. Day one saw conditions deteriorate throughout the course of the round, as a cold front began making its way across the state and into the Pinehurst region. Winds picked up and were swirling, making play a little more challenging than usual.
Team scores are compiled based on the three lowest individual scores from a five-player team.
In the 1A/2A Championship at Longleaf Golf & Country Club, Katherine Schuster from First Flight is out to a five-shot lead as she posted a 2-under par, 70, through the first 18 holes. She fired a well-balanced pair of 35’s on the front and back nines to put herself in front of Currituck County’s Bailee Twiford who shot 3-over par, 75. Currituck County holds a 10-shot advantage over Mount Airy. Currituck golfers combined for a 57-over, 273.
In the 3A Championship at Foxfire Resort and Golf Club’s Red Fox Course, defending team champion, Rockingham County, leads the team competition by 22 shots over Northern Guilford. Rockingham County got a stellar round from Hailey Joy who carded a 3-under par, 69, on her way to a four-shot advantage over Northwood’s Katharina Floyd. Olivia John from Rockingham is in sixth spot after a six-over par, 78 with teammate Victoria Cook tied for eighth after an eight-over par, 80.
In the 4A Championship at Pinehurst No. 1, Cardinal Gibbons holds a five-shot lead over the defending team champions Pinecrest. Gibbons sits a 12-over par, 228, thanks to Hannah Rose Bruxvoort’s 2-over, 74, which has her tied for third. Megan Kanaby contributed for the Crusaders as well with a 4-over par 76 that has her tied for seventh. Defending individual champion Jennifer Chang from Athens Drive has a comfortable four-stroke advantage over Kayla Ward from Garner. Chang fired a 3-under par, 69, to set the pace for the field.
