CERRO GORDO – Joseph Burney’s 2-run triple highlighted a 3-run 6th inning that secured a 10-6 victory for Bladen County over Whiteville American Saturday in the opening round of the Diamond Youth Baseball District 2 Majors Tournament.
Bladen County advances to play Whiteville National Sunday at 5 p.m. Whiteville National defeated Columbus County 18-4 Saturday in their opener.
Whiteville American had trimmed a 7-1 Bladen lead to 7-6 when Chatam Rigsbee smoked a 1-out single to center field and Keithan Russ was hit by a pitch to start the Bladen 6th. Burney walloped his triple to right-center field. After Oxiel Campos walked, Will Allen’s fielder’s choice plated Burney to pad the lead to 10-6.
Russ came on in relief to pitch a 1-2-3 bottom of the 6th to end the game.
Rigsbee led off the game with a walk, and Russ yanked a single to left. Burney knocked in Rigsbee with a single, and Trevaugn Shipman and Malakye Rogers belted 2-out singles that scored Russ and Burney for a 3-0 Bladen lead.
Nolan Brisson laced a single to center field in the Bladen 2nd inning. Russ raked a single to left, and Burney walked. Campos brought home Brisson with a single to center field that upped the lead to 4-0.
Rigsbee drew a 2-out walk in the 4th inning, and Russ smashed a double to right-center field that scored Rigsbee. Burney swatted a single to right-center field. Campos drilled a triple to left-center field that scored Russ and Burney and pushed the lead to 7-1.
Russ batted 3-for-3 with a double, 3 runs scored and a run batted in. Burney turned in a 3-for-3 game with a triple, 4 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Campos batted 2-for-3 with a triple and 3 RBIs. Rigsbee, Shipman, Rogers and Brisson added 1 hit each. Rigsbee scored 3 runs and Brisson scored a run. Allen, Shipman and Rogers had 1 RBI each.
Burney started on the mound for Bladen and pitched 2.1 innings allowing 1 run on 1 hit and 4 walks while striking out 7. Campos worked 1.2 innings of relief and allowed 2 runs on a hit, a hit batter and 4 walks while striking out 1. Allen worked 1 inning of relief and allowed 3 runs on 3 hits, a walk and a hit batter.
