A former Bladenboro Mayor who served in that capacity for 20 years has passed away.

Edgar Evans, 87, served as Mayor of the town of Bladenboro from 1974 until 1993, according to town records. He was a friend to everyone he met.

Current Mayor Rufus Duckworth said, “Edgar was a good friend to me.”

Duckworth recounted on his Facebook page how Evans contacted him following his election as Mayor and offered to help him. He also said he would miss the conversations he and Evans shared about the town and things that were occurring.

Bladenboro Town Commissioner Gene Norton said, “I’ve known him all of my life.”

Norton said Evans was the “E” in J & E Texaco which is now known as CWs. Norton described Evans as a “people person.”

“You couldn’t ask for any better person,” said Norton.

Bladenboro Town Commissioner Patsy Callihan echoed Norton’s thoughts.

“He cared about the town. He cared about the people. We’re going to miss him,” said Callihan.

She said she has known Evans all of her life and he was well thought of by everyone in the town.

Elizabethtown Mayor Sylvia Campbell said, “He loved those people like they were his own family.”

She continued by saying Evans set a wonderful example for others to follow.

Bladenboro Town Commissioner Rodney Hester said, “I grew up with Steven and Paul (Evans’ sons).”

Hester recalled playing ball in high school and after practice, he would go to the Evans’ home to wait for his parents to pick him up.

“He was a great ambassador for our town,” said Hester.

Town Commissioner Greg Sykes said he has many fond memories of meeting at the Evans’ home following ball practice.

“He has always been a part of my life. He has always been a mentor to me,” said Sykes.

Evans was a veteran of the Korean War and was involved in many civic and community organizations in Bladenboro.  He is also a recipient of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine.

The family will receive friends from 10 am – 12 noon on Thursday, November 15th, at Lennons Crossroads Church, 13804 Haynes Lennon Highway, Evergreen, NC followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 12 pm with Dr. Fred Senter officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Edgar Evans Memorial Fund c/o Lennons Crossroads Baptist Church, P.O. Box 867, Bladenboro, NC.
