Spread the love

By Cara Beth Lewis

UPDATE: According to event planners, the fundraiser for Crystal Leigh Buffkin that was scheduled for this Friday night has been cancelled due to issues beyond control. Any tickets that were purchased for the event will be refunded, and a live auction will be held for items that had already been donated. A GoFundMe page will be set up for Crystal as well. On social media, Crystal said, “Thank you so, so, very much for your love and support!”

Crystal Leigh Buffkin, a local wife, mother, and teacher, has been diagnosed with Moersch-Woltman Syndrome, also known as “Stiff Person Syndrome.” Crystal is currently facing the symptoms of this syndrome, as well as the expenses of it. It is presently undetermined when or if she will be able to return to work at Lumberton High School as a Science teacher.

According to yalemedicine.org, “Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS) is an autoimmune and neurological disorder with no known cause that can make the muscles in the torso and limbs alternate between rigidity and spasms.”

Crystal is currently staying at an in-patient rehabilitation hospital, where she is receiving assistance with daily living.

A flyer shared by her family and organizers of her fundraiser stated, “Currently, all finances are being used for home care and preparation, travel expenses, and medical care. Crystal and her family appreciate the thoughts, prayers, and assistance received.”

Theresa Davis with the Addy-Gre’ Oaks Barn Events and Planning will host a fundraiser for Crystal and her family on October 29th, 2021. The fundraiser will begin at 6:30 pm, and the cost is $100 per couple and will include food and drinks. A silent auction including a full wedding weekend at the Addy-Gre’ Oaks Barn Venue, a full catering event, ball game tickets, vacation spots, a reverse raffle, and more will occur at the fundraiser.

Other donations can be sent via Venmo to @Crystal-Buffkin-1.

Tickets for the fundraiser should be purchased on or before Saturday, October 23rd. Contact Theresa Davis at (910) 774-0019 with any questions.
