The National Hurricane Center estimated Bladen County received more than three feet of rain from Hurricane Florence in September 2018. Harmony Hall in White Oak, NC, had a walking trail bridge that was washed away due to the hurricane flooding.

The bridge has been closed ever since. Andrew Runion with Boy Scouts of America Troop 600 took notice. He wanted to make a difference with his Eagle Scout Project and took on the assignment of building a new walking trail bridge. Runion planned, prepared, recruited help, and got the job done over his Spring Break.

Runion stated on a social post, “It is now back open for walking and tourist. Thanks to our friends at Southern Tire of Whiteville helped transport all material and equipment.”

Andrew Runion is a 14-year-old, eighth-grade student at Emereau: Bladen in Elizabethtown, NC. He is the son of Andy Runion and the late Amber Runion.
