A staff report

Elizabethtown, a tight-knit community in North Carolina, mourns the loss of one of its beloved residents, Bruce Barbour, a 76-year-old United States Army Veteran who passed away on Friday, January 26, 2024, at his home. Bruce’s life was marked by unwavering dedication to his country, a passion for collecting military memorabilia, and a heart filled with warmth and kindness.

Bruce’s journey in service to his nation began in 1967 when he joined the United States Army. He served with distinction, completing two tours of duty in Vietnam. His valor and commitment were recognized through various honors, including the National Defense Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device. Bruce’s bravery and sacrifice in the line of duty exemplify the true spirit of an American hero.

Beyond his military service, Bruce was an excellent electrician who operated a small business for 40 years in the northern part of the United States. After his retirement, Bruce was an active member of the Elizabethtown Kiwanis Club and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). His involvement in these organizations allowed him to continue his service and give back to the community he held dear.

One of Bruce’s passions in life was his collection of antique military memorabilia. He cherished these artifacts as a way to honor the sacrifices of those who came before him and to preserve the history of our armed forces. Additionally, he had a deep love for antique cars, reflecting his appreciation for the craftsmanship and ingenuity of a bygone era.

Bruce was not only a dedicated patriot but also a lover of good food. He was a familiar face at several local restaurants, where he enjoyed the camaraderie of fellow patrons and shared stories over a meal. Bruce’s friendly nature and welcoming handshake made him a joy to be around, and his anecdotes were a source of laughter and inspiration to those lucky enough to encounter him.

Bruce Barbour’s passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Joseph Barbour, Jr., and Mittie Agnes McDuffie Barbour, as well as his sister, Patricia Barbour Thompson. He is survived by three first cousins, Walter McDuffie (Diane), Mike Gooden (Francis), and Steve Gooden (Ruth), in addition to many cousins and cherished friends.

A funeral service to celebrate Bruce’s life will be held on Saturday, February 3, 2024, at 11:00 am at Elizabethtown Presbyterian Church. The Reverend Dayton Wilson will officiate the service, and Bruce will be laid to rest in the Elizabethtown City Cemetery following the ceremony.

In lieu of food or donations for the family, Bruce’s loved ones kindly request that donations be made to the Bladen Crisis Food Bank in Elizabethtown. Dr. Lisa Bryan, announcing Bruce’s recent passing to the Kiwanis Club of Elizabethtown, aptly summed up the sentiment of the community: “We lost a treasured member. I wanted to share with great sadness that Bruce Barbour passed away. Bruce is a long-time member of our club and, until his recent sickness, always in attendance at meetings and events.”

Bruce Barbour’s legacy will endure through the memories of those he touched with his kindness, patriotism, and zest for life. He will be remembered as a true American patriot who served his country with honor and embraced his community with open arms and a welcoming spirit.
