Kirby Vacuum is one of a very few companies that still sell their product by going door-to-door. Many folks across the region have had all manner of stories to tell about their encounters with Kirby Vacuum sales representatives. Some are positive and some are negative.
Emily Flax, public information officer with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, said that their deputies have not had any calls recently regarding Kirby Vacuums. She did note, however, that the Kirby Vacuum sales representatives can be very persistent in attempting to have someone agree to a demonstration in their home and/or attempting to sell the product.
Some folks in Bladen County have had encounters with Kirby Vacuum sales vehicles over the past year circulating in their neighborhoods as late as 9:30 p.m.
Flax recommended that if someone comes to your door attempting to sell anything in which you are not interested in, say no and then ask them to leave. If they refuse to leave, call the police.
The website WatchForScams.com, states that Kirby Vacuum is not a scam per se but folks have reported problems not with the Kirby Vacuum product itself but with the sales representatives. According to the website, folks have reported sales representatives who offered to clean two rooms of carpeting for free with no obligation to purchase the product. The website says that once the demonstration was completed the sales representatives would use high pressure sales tactics to try to get the homeowner to purchase the products demonstrated sometimes at a cost of as much as $2,000.
The website WatchForScams.com reminds folks that a product demonstration will eventually lead to a sales pitch of some type. The website says that some home demonstrations have lasted well beyond the agreed time. The website also notes that should you agree to a home demonstration, remember to decide how long you want the demonstration to last and then stick to your decision.
Should you choose to make a purchase, get all of the information regarding the purchase in writing.
If you decide not to purchase the product, say no and stand by your decision.
Remember, if any offer sounds too good to be true, it generally is.
