$5,000 grant from AgCarolina Farm Credit increases the McKinney-Vento Fund over the $10,000 goal to support homeless students enrolled with Bladen County Schools.

LUMBERTON, NC (12/6/2023) – As part of LRUW’s 2023 Campaign, United Way partnered with the Bladen County Schools to provide winter coats, shoes, food, and twin air mattresses for the homeless students in the Bladen County public schools. To date, 81 students in the public school system have been identified as homeless. Considering last year’s enrollment reached 144 children, the number is anticipated to grow.

With the help of the community, we have successfully reached our internal goal of raising over $12,500, including in-kind donations from local entities in Bladen County. AgCarolina Farm Credit, Four County Electric Trust, Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation, Specialty Products Technology (SPT), Leinwand’s of Elizabethtown, Trinity Methodist Church, and Abe Branch Emmanuel Holiness Church.

“These entities share our views on the importance of children having a good night's sleep, warm clothing, and food to be productive students in school daily,” said Executive Director Tate Johnson, “These simple things we take for granted ensure children's enrollment in school without external factors that cannot be controlled”.
