BLADENBORO – West Bladen 2-sport star Makayla Wright signed Wednesday to play basketball next season at Central Carolina Community College in Sanford.

Wright was named All-Southeastern Athletic Conference basketball for the 2021-2022 season but suffered an injury to her ACL during this past volleyball season and missed her senior basketball season.

About her All-Conference junior year, head Lady Knight basketball Coach Brian McCleney said, “Makayla has the ability to rebound the ball at one end then take it on the dribble to the other end. You don’t find too many players who can do that.”

Wright helped lead the West Bladen defense that season while averaging 7 points per game. She poured in a career high 21 points against Clinton, tossed in 17 points in a win over South Columbus and had 7 steals and 6 rebounds in a win at East Columbus.

Wright also earned All-Conference volleyball honors for the 2021 season.

Central Carolina won 6 of their last 11 games this season and is coached by Marcel Webster, a New York City native, who has over 25 years of coaching experience.

“We are happy for Makayla to have this opportunity to pursue her dream despite missing her senior year with the torn ACL.” said Coach McCleney. “I believe she will be an asset to Central Carolina Community.”
