ELIZABETHTOWN – Elizabethtown completed an undefeated season Thursday night with a 30-0 victory over Tar Heel in the Bladen Five Middle School Conference finale for both teams.

The Cougars won the conference championship with a 6-0 record. “This was our second undefeated championship,” said Elizabethtown Coach Rick Whitaker.

Javante McDowell broke loose around left end for a 38-yard touchdown run in the first quarter that put Elizabethtown on top 6-0. Tar Heel blocked the extra point kick attempt.

After the Cougar defense stopped Tar Heel on four plays to regain possession, Elizabethtown moved to the Panther 15 yardline. Quarterback Freddy Wooten threw a 15-yard pass to Rasean McKoy for the touchdown. Chase Starkloff darted into the end zone for the 2-point conversion and a 14-0 lead.

Elizabethtown kicked off to start the second half, and a jarring tackle by Wooten knocked the ball loose from the Panther runner. The Cougars recovered on the Tar Heel 35 yardline.

Zach Meares powered through a tackle and galloped 35 yards for a touchdown on the next play. Darius Autry carried across the goalline for the 2-point conversion and a 22-0 lead.

The Cougars mounted another scoring drive on their next possession. Starkloff scooted 18 yards around right end for the touchdown. Willie Battle bolted across the goalline for the 2-point conversion.

The Cougars drove to the Panther 20 yardline on their next possession before time ran out.

“The guys really worked hard this year,” said Coach Whitaker. “The 8th graders really impressed me with their dedication and leadership. They will leave a good impression and work ethic for the returning 7th graders next year.”
