CLARKTON – Khadijah Jones and Mariah Smith combined for 26 points to lead Clarkton School of Discovery to a 33-20 victory over Tar Heel Monday night in the opening round of the Bladen Five Middle School Conference Tournament.
Jones topped the Lady Blue Devil scoring with 15 points, and Smith finished with 11 points.
Jones drove to the hoop for a trio of baskets and a free throw to lead Clarkton to a 13-7 first quarter lead. Smith drained a 3-point shot and a 2-point shot, and Lauren Bowen hit a free throw.
Shelby Pharr tossed in a pair of baskets for Tar Heel in the first period, and teammate Shaunessy McMillian bombed in a 3-point shot.
Smith connected for 2 more baskets in the second quarter. Tara Rogers dropped in a basket, and AnnaGrey Heustess sank 2 free throws for a 21-10 Lady Blue Devil halftime lead. McMillian buried a 3-point shot for the Lady Panthers in the second quarter.
Jones lit up the scoreboard with 3 baskets and 2 free throws in the third quarter as the Clarkton lead grew to 31-16. Smith added a basket for CSD, and Pharr nailed a pair of 3-point shots for Tar Heel in the third quarter.
Pharr and Le’nya Harrell pumped in baskets for Tar Heel in the fourth quarter, and Sara Gargala netted the only Clarkton basket in the period.
Pharr led the Tar Heel scoring with 12 points, and McMillian followed with 6 points.
Clarkton improved to 7-0 with the win and will play Elizabethtown in the girls championship gameThursday at 5 p.m.
