Observances for the National Day of Prayer were held all over the United States and here in Bladen County on Thursday. At noon, residents gathered on the front lawn of the Bladenboro Historical Society Building and by the flag poles in front of the Elizabethtown Municipal Building in Elizabethtown to pray. The scripture which serves as the theme for this year’s event, is Daniel 9:19: “O Lord, hear. O Lord, forgive. O Lord, listen and act! For your own sake, do not delay, O my God, for your people and your city bear your name.”

People prayed for the nation, its leaders, fire fighters, law enforcement, EMS personnel, nurses, doctors, teachers schools, their towns and communities. In Bladenboro, this was the first year the town has held an observance for the National Day of Prayer. The prayer service in Bladenboro was organized and lead by the Rev. Warren Hill. He said, “The Lord laid it on my heart and I got confirmation from another pastor when he called me to ask about it.” The scripture theme was shared and Rev. Hill was joined by Nicholas Peavy, Corey Hester, Steven Cox, Bobby Smith, Pas. Ronnie Brisson, Pas. Christopher Hefner, Pas. Joey Autry, and Pas. Ricky Donaldson.

In Elizabethtown, Evangelist Clara Adams led the prayer service. She has been organizing the prayer service in Elizabethtown for about 19-20 years.  As everyone gathered round, the scripture from Daniel 9:19 was read aloud. Each person paused and prayed for local, county, state and federal leaders, and our families.

Adams said, “Pray and, if you have time, join together and pray together and pray for the nation.”

The National Day of Prayer was created by a joint resolution of the United States Congress and was signed President Harry S. Truman in 1952.
