NC 87 at Hammonds Creek
Right now and continuing through the next two week period, the only (planned) road closure in the county is on NC 87 at the Hammonds Creek Bridge. Thursday, a separate truck detour was implemented in order to try to get the trucks off of the narrow lanes of Airport Road. Based upon the number of trucks I have seen in Clarkton, it would appear the most are detouring. Work will begin on Monday, June 29th, in the Town of Bladenboro on the north bound lane only for North Main Street (NC Highway 410/131) between NC Highway 211 Business and NC Highway 211 Bypass. Highland Paving Company will be removing some old pavement for several inches and paving it back the same day. Weather permitting, the work should be finished by Thursday, July 2nd. Flaggers working with a pilot vehicle will take motorist through the daily work zone.
On Monday, July 13th, Highland Paving Company will return and start back work in the Town of Bladenboro. The work will be on South Main Street this time (NC Highway 410/131/241) with a marked detour for motorists using Old Abbottsburg Road, Grimsley Farm Road, NC Highway 211, and NC Highway 211 Bypass. This particular work on South Main Street involves the contractor removing all of the old asphalt down into the dirt subgrade. A new thicker and stronger pavement structure will be paved back. This will be slow tedious work and will affect homeowners and businesses from Bladenboro Middle School all the way north to the CSX Railroad tracks. Work will take place during daylight hours. Once the strengthening asphalt work is completed, the final surface layer of asphalt will be paved on NC 131, South Main Street, and North Main Street just shy of the NC 211 Bypass. The contractor wants to complete the work no later than July 31st.
We realize this will be a major inconvenience to a lot of people, but this is the only way to repair that bad pavement. We thank everyone in advance for their patience!
