RALEIGH – Amid stay-at-home orders, North Carolina’s 911 telecommunicators, often called the first, first responders, continue to be on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic, working around the clock to respond to emergencies across the state.
Due to COVID-19, the state’s 911 centers have limited access to their facilities and prepared for appropriate accommodations for their staff. Their efforts have focused on limiting the number of staff present in their buildings, maintaining social distancing through shifts, utilizing backup 911 centers, and implementing other continuity plans.
“As the first, first responders, 911 telecommunicators are dedicated to responding to emergencies across the state through this time,” 911 Board executive director Pokey Harris said. “Not only are they essential staff, but they also are individuals with lives and families outside of their role. During this time of uncertainty for all of us, we want North Carolinians to know that our state’s 911 telecommunicators are here for them.”
People should only call 9-1-1 for emergencies. For non-emergencies or questions and concerns related to COVID-19, residents should call 2-1-1. NC 2-1-1 can refer callers to the organizations in their local community best equipped to address their specific needs, including food, shelter, energy assistance, housing, parenting resources, health care, employment, substance abuse treatment, as well as specific resources for older adults and for persons with disabilities and much more. Simply dial 2-1-1 or 888-892-1162 for assistance. NC 2-1-1 operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year and resources are available in most languages.
The N.C. 911 Board is responsible for both wireline and wireless 911 communications in the state, as well as related policies and procedures, and it administers the state’s 911 Fund. The fund is used to support equipment purchases for all 911 centers in the state. The board is housed with the N.C. Department of Information Technology.
