October is Roger’s Wish month at the Bladen Journal in Elizabethtown. Donations of blankets and sleeping bags will be accepted at the Bladen County Library, the Bladen Journal, and the ABC Store during the entire month of October. Items donated will then be distributed to the homeless and needy on November 6.
The annual project is named in memory of the late Roger Theodore Grunder, who began the collection drive just weeks before he died in a car accident on August 30, 2013.
This year his sister Mariea has partnered with the Bladen Journal to continue her late brother’s heartfelt mission. During its first 6-years the project collected and distributed nearly 1000 blankets and sleeping bags.
The annual event has been featured television news stations, WWAY and WECT, as well as, in Carolina Country magazine. Some of the donations have been sent from as far away as Florida and New York since it’s inception in 2013.
