Although Wednesday started with heartbreaking news of a fallen law enforcement officer, officers from the Whiteville Police Department, Elizabethtown Police Department, and the Bladen County Sheriffs Office trained together on Tuesday and Wednesday in Precision Law Enforcement Driving and Defensive Maneuvers. The training took place on the taxi-way of the Elizabethtown Airport.

“With logistical support from Bladen Community College, I brought in highly specialized instructors from North Wilkesboro, Hickory, and Lincolnton, to assist in the presentation and delivery of this important training session,” said Sgt. Gary Turlington of the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office Training Unit.

He added, none of the adjunct instructors that assisted in the instruction and training had any less then at least three decades of service in law enforcement each.

“They are all retired members of the Highway Patrol’s Specialized Driver Training program and part of my original cadre of instructors,” said Sgt. Turlington.

This type of intensive training affords these officers a unique opportunity to train in  a controlled environment for the realities of patrol duties utilizing these instructors’ vast experiences and expertise. The ability to work and train together reinforces the certainty that a more highly trained officer is congruent to a more professional officer, stated Sgt. Turlington.
