Chemours Fayetteville Works is preparing to break ground on a new emissions control facility on Tuesday morning at 11 a.m.

The groundbreaking marks the construction of an Emissions Control Facility which includes a thermal oxidizer and a thermolysis reactor as well as other technology that in combination is expected to result in an overall 99 percent reduction of air and water emissions of C3 dimer acid (also referred to as GenX) and other PFAS compounds by the end of 2019, according to Chemours Fayetteville Works spokeswoman Lisa Randall.

According to Wikipedia, a thermal oxidizer uses heat to break down hazardous gases before releasing them into the atmosphere.

Bladen County Economic Development Director Chuck Heustess said the construction of the Emissions Control Facility will benefit the plant and the county.

“It will be great because it will contain emissions there on the site and help the site to start growing again,” said Heustess.

The project is estimated to create 15 permanent jobs and Heustess said he has no idea how many construction-related jobs will be created. The construction of the facility is estimated to take one year.
