The 2024 Gathering of Friends, an eagerly awaited annual event celebrating the vibrant community behind the Mountains-to-Sea Trail (MST), has officially opened its registration. Set against the picturesque backdrop of Black Mountain, North Carolina, this year’s gathering promises an enriching weekend from May 3rd to 5th, filled with adventure, learning, and camaraderie.
The Gathering kicks off on Friday, May 3rd, with an exciting lineup of activities designed to immerse participants in the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the MST area. Attendees can look forward to six guided hikes, a trail-building workshop, and an array of fun excursions around Black Mountain and its environs. Highlights include archery lessons, a Crafting a Sense of Place workshop, the RootEd Learning Expo along McDowell County trails, and a tour of Old Fort and Marion, hosted by West Marion Community Inc. The day concludes with a welcome reception and dinner at Blue Ridge Assembly, honoring the dedication of the trail’s volunteers, maintainers, and completers.
The momentum continues into Saturday, May 4th, with the annual meeting taking place at Blue Ridge Assembly. This session offers an insightful overview of the MST’s latest developments, featuring presentations from trail leaders, local organizations, and hikers who share their experiences and projects that are enhancing the trail community. Attendees will enjoy complimentary breakfast and lunch as part of their registration package. Post-meeting, a group hike around Laurel Lake is scheduled, followed by an evening of guided star gazing and socializing.
The Gathering concludes on Sunday, May 5th, with more guided hikes in the surrounding areas, allowing participants to further explore the scenic beauty and tranquility of the MST.
