A Sampson County church was destroyed in a fire overnight Wednesday. The Evening Light Holiness Church in Garland was gutted in the fire with only the brick walls remaining.

The Garland Fire Department was assisted by units from three different counties. Units from Sampson County included Harrells, Autryville, Taylor’s Bridge, Clinton, Halls, Spivey’s Corner, Roseboro, Salemburg and Turkey fire departments. In addition they were also assisted by Bladen County units from White Lake, Hickory Grove, Ammon, Bay Tree Lakes, and Elizabethtown fire departments and the Magnolia Fire Department in Duplin County.

According to reports, the church is more than 100 years old and was located on Airport Road in Garland. The fire is reported to have started under the floor in one of the wings adjacent to the sanctuary.
