Closure at U.S. 74 and 76 needed for new interchange

NC DOTWHITEVILLE – Starting Monday, Aug. 6, the N.C. Department of Transportation will close Hallsboro Road at U.S. 74 and 76 to begin constructing an interchange east of Whiteville where trees have been cleared for the project.

The closure means traffic on Hallsboro Road will be unable to access U.S. 74 and 76, and vice versa at that location. A detour will direct drivers onto N.C. 214, Red Hill Road (U.S. 74 Business) and Whitehall Road.

When completed by May 2020, the interchange will have a bridge that carries Hallsboro Road traffic over the highway, as well as ramps allowing traffic to enter the highway without stopping.  Replacing what is referred to as an at-grade intersection with an interchange and overpass will decrease the risk of crashes.

The department in February awarded a nearly $9.4 million contract to BMCO Construction Inc. of Lumberton for the project. This is the latest in NCDOT’s ongoing efforts to improve mobility and safety on U.S. 74 by building more interchanges.
