The N.C. Pork Council and Smithfield Foods provided more than 175,000 servings of protein for Raleigh’s Inter-Faith Food Shuttle on Friday.

The council and National Pork Board donated 150 pork barbecue shoulders with 10 barbecue cooks from the council’s Whole Hog Barbecue Series cooking up a lot of food for needy folks.

It was part of a national initiative by Smithfield Foods with plans for donating 40 million servings of protein to the Feeding America network of food banks across the country. The Inter-Faith Food Shuttle is a member organization, while Smithfield has large pork-production facilities in North Carolina, including one in Bladen County.

“Sourcing needed protein has become increasingly difficult as our supply chains are overextended and donating less,” says Inter-Faith Food Shuttle’s Interim CEO/President Bethann James. “Our access to necessary protein items is dwindling. We are grateful for this creative partnership.”
