ELIZABETHTOWN – Whiteville slugged 4 home runs and capitalized on a couple of early Eagle miscues to build a 10-1 lead en route to a 16-6 non-conference softball victory over East Bladen Monday night.

A pair of errors and singles by Tessa Nicholson and Kloe Sellers produced 3 Whiteville runs in the 1st inning. Sellers drove in two with her hit.

Sophomore Laura Davisson lifted a hit down the left field line in the Lady Eagle 1st, advanced on sophomore Emma Turbeville’s hit off the pitcher then scored on sophomore Karli Priest’s infield hit to trim the margin to 3-1.

Senior Alyssa Futrell drilled a double to left-center field, Maegan Burney walked, and senior Kayleigh Raynor smacked a single to center in the East half of the second, but all 3 runners were left stranded.

Pitcher Kadance Hammonds’ fly ball landed in left field in the Whiteville 3rd inning. Xztaysha Porter was hit by a pitch, and Marissa Ivey clubbed a double that scored courtesy runner Brooke Hewett and Porter to push the lead to 5-1.

Turbeville hammered a double to left to begin the East 3rd inning. Priest pulled an infield hit to shortstop, and Futrell’s fielder’s choice scored Turbeville and whittled the margin to 5-2.

Emily Hewett singled and Tessa Nicholson reached on an error in the Lady Wolfpack 4th, before Emma Hooks launched a 3-run home run over the center field fence. Sellers walked, and Porter smashed a 2-run homer to left that grew the lead to 10-2.

Davisson ripped a double to left to start the East Bladen 5th inning. Turbeville walked, but Davisson was retired on Priest’s fielder’s choice. A throwing error on the play plated Turbeville. Junior Mariah Smith rapped a single to center that scored Priest. Futrell walked, and sophomore AnnaGrey Heustess’ fielder’s choice retired Smith.

Senior Carlie West yanked a single to left, and Burney delivered a 2-run single that scored Futrell and Heustess. Raynor followed with a single, but pinch-runner Dyiamon Robinson was thrown out at the plate. The four Lady Eagle runs sliced the Whiteville lead to 10-6.

Emily Hewett drew a 2-out walk in the Lady Wolfpack 7th inning. Nicholson pounded a 2-run homer to left. Hooks walked, and Sellers slammed a 2-run homer to center field. Hammonds and Ivey sandwiched doubles around a Porter single that stretched the lead to 16-6.

Ivey batted 3-for-5 with 2 doubles and 3 runs batted in to lead the Whiteville hitters. Porter finished 2-for-3 with a homer, 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Sellers was 2-for-4 with a homer, 4 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Hooks batted 2-for-4 with a homer, 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Nicholson was 2-for-5 with a homer, 2 RBIs and 3 runs scored.

Turbeville batted 3-for-3 with a double and 2 runs scored to lead the Lady Eagle hitters. Priest finished 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Davisson was 2-for-4 with a double. Raynor also batted 2-for-4. Futrell doubled, drove in a run and scored a run. Burney drove in 2 runs with a single. Smith had an RBI single. West added a single, and Heustess scored a run.

Raynor started in the circle for East and pitched 3-plus innings allowing 8 runs – 4 earned — on 3 walks and 5 hits while striking out five. Davisson pitched the final 4 innings and gave up 8 runs on 8 hits and a walk while striking out three.

Hammonds pitched 6 innings for Whiteville to pick up the win allowing 6 runs on 13 hits and 3 walks while striking out two.

It was the opening game for the Lady Eagles, who will host South Columbus Tuesday at 6 p.m.
