1881 – Kansas becomes first state to prohibit all alcoholic beverages.

1906 – Will Keith Kellogg, after a falling out with his brother over development credit and wanting to add sugar to cereal, joins Charles D. Bolin in founding the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company, not the multinational food manufacturer Kellogg’s.

1913 – First prize inserted into a Cracker Jack box.

1922 – Ed Wynn becomes first talent to sign as a radio entertainer.

1934 – US contract air mail service cancelled, replaced by US Army for six months.

1942 – President Franklin Roosevelt orders detention and internment of all west coast Japanese-Americans.

1945 – US 5th Fleet launches invasion of Iwo Jima against the Japanese with 30,000 Marines.

1952 – American defending champion Dick Button becomes first figure skater to land a triple jump in competition. He performs triple loop in Olympic free skate in Oslo and wins gold medal ahead of Austria’s Helmut Seibt.

1963 – “The Feminine Mystique” by Betty Friedan, widely credited as the start of second-wave feminism, is published.

1965 – NFL adds sixth official, the back line judge.

1968 – Children’s educational TV program “Mr. Rogers Neighborhood” debuts on NET (now PBS).

1973 – “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree” single released by Dawn featuring Tony Orlando. It was the Billboard Song of the Year.

1977 – Space shuttle Enterprise makes first test flight atop a 747 jetliner.

1983 – Fernando Valenzuela wins his salary arbitration of $1 million.

1989 – 31st Daytona 500: Darrell Waltrip wins when the Hendrick Racing team decides to use fuel strategy. He is the only car not to pit in the closing laps.

2001 – An Oklahoma City bombing museum is dedicated at the Oklahoma City National Memorial.

2006 – 55th NBA All-Star Game, Toyota Center, Houston, TX: East beats West 122-120. Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James is selected Most Valuable Player.

2012 – 44 people killed in prison brawl in Apodaca, Mexico, between two rival drug cartels.

2019 – Four-time MLB All-Star third baseman Manny Machado agrees to the biggest free-agent contract in American sports history, a 10 year deal worth $300 million with the San Diego Padres.

2023 – US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, visiting the earthquake-affected regions of southern Turkey, pledges $100 million in aid.
