1870 – Standard Oil Company created by John D. Rockefeller (30%), his brother and other business partners. The company controlled about 10% of world oil.

1911 – First photo taken from an airplane in the United States shows an aerial panorama of San Diego, California.

1923 – Last troops leave Rhineland (Germany).

1943 – First US President to visit a foreign country in wartime. President Franklin Roosevelt leaves for Casablanca, Morocco.

1946 – The United States bounces first radar signal off the Moon from Fort Monmouth, New Jersey.

1949 – RCA introduces a 45 RPM record.

1952 – “The Greatest Show on Earth”, directed and produced by Cecil B. Demille, starring James Stewart and Charlton Heston, premieres in New York. It wins Best Picture in 1953.

1953 – Third NFL Pro Bowl, Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum: National Conference beats American Conference 27-7. Defensive back Don Doll of the Detroit Lions named Most Valuable Player.

1956 – Elvis Presley records single “Heartbreak Hotel.”

1964 – Panama severs diplomatic relations with the United States.

1965 – 15th NFL Pro Bowl, LA Memorial Coliseum: Western Conference beats Eastern Conference 34-14. Most Valuable Players are Minnesota Vikings quarterback Fran Tarkenton and Detroit Lions defensive back Terry Barr

1973 – Gas tank on Staten Island explodes, 40 die.

1982 – AFC Championship, Riverfront Stadium, Cincinnati: The Bengals beat the San Diego Chargers 27-7 in the “Freezer Bowl.” The wind chill was reported at minus-59 degrees.

1984 – Clara Peller asks “Where’s the Beef?” in a commercial for Wendy’s hamburger chain.

1990 – NCAA approves random testing for college football players.

1997 – Dow Corning provides $295 million to settle breast implant suits.

2003 – NBA announces Charlotte is awarded an NBA expansion franchise to be known as the Charlotte Bobcats and start play in 2004-05. The team changes its nickname to the Charlotte Hornets for the 2014-15 season.

2018 – Jeff Bezos becomes the second man worth over $100 billion as his wealth hits $106 billion due to a rise in Amazon’s share price.

2021 – PGA of America pulls the 2022 PGA Championship from Trump National Golf Club at Bedminster, New Jersey days after supporters of President Trump attacked the US Capitol.

2022 – The United States reports 1.34 million new COVID-19 infections, a global record, with Omicron variant accounting for an estimated 95% of cases.
