1880 – Thomas Edison patents electric incandescent lamp.

1894 – University of Chicago beats Chicago YMCA 19-11 in first college basketball game.

1915 – US Marines occupy Haiti.

1926 – US Senate agrees to join World Court.

1939 – First flight of the Lockheed P-38 Lighting.

1941 – Peruvian ambassador Richardo Rivera-Schreiber warns American Ambassador Joseph Grew about Japanese assault on Pearl Harbor.

1944 – Casey Stengal, manager of the Boston Braves since 1939, resigns after Lou Perini, Gudo Rugo and Joseph Maney buy control of the team.

1948 – First tape recorder sold.

1954 – Boxer Archie Moore beats Joey Maxim in 15-round unanimous decision to retain his world light heavyweight title at the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida. It’s the last of a famous trilogy of fights, all won by Moore.

1961 – “Sing Along with Mitch” {Miller} premieres on NBC TV.

1967 – A fire in the Apollo 1 Command Module kills astronauts Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger B. Chaffee during a launch rehearsal.

1969 – Chuck Noll is named head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers. He is the youngest coach in NFL history at the time.

1973 – UCLA’s basketball team wins an NCAA-record 61st consecutive game.

1984 – Michael Jackson is burned during filming for a Pepsi commercial.

1988 – Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously approves nomination of Judge Anthony Kennedy to US Supreme Court.

1997 – “Men are from Mars, Women Are From Venus” opens at Gershwin in New York City.

2007 – Australian Open Women’s Tennis: Serena Williams beats Maria Sharapova 6-1, 6-2. It’s the first time the tournament used Hawk-Eye system to officiate line calls.

2017 – President Donald Trump issues executive order banning travel to the United States for seven mostly Muslim countries and suspending admission for refugees.

2019 – NFL Pro Bowl, Camping World Stadium, Orlando, Florida: AFC beats NFC 26-7. Most Valuable Players are Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and New York Jets safety Jamal Adams.

2022 – President Joe Biden pledges to nominate a Black woman to the Supreme Court.
